Eleanor Roosevelt, Diplomat, U.S. First Lady (1884–1962)

Cross over the bridge and pond to Eleanor Roosevelt's cottage at Val-Kill located on the grounds of the Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site.

Eleanor, the wife of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, changed the role of the first lady through her active participation in American politics. She gave press conferences, spoke out for human rights, was strongly involved in children's causes, and was a tireless advocate for women's rights. She stood against racial discrimination and traveled abroad to visit U.S. troops during World War II.

Eleanor Roosevelt chose Val-Kill for her retreat, her office, her home, and her "laboratory" for social change during the prominent and influential period of her life from 1924 until her death in 1962. During that time she formulated and carried out her social and political beliefs.

Val-Kill, Eleanor Roosevelt's cottage and a National Historic Site, is located at Hyde Park, NY 12538 in Dutchess County; on the grounds of the FDR Estate.

Val-Kill is the place most closely associated with one of the most prominent women of 20th-century America.

Eleanor Roosevelt Center at Val-Kill (ERVK) works to preserve Eleanor's home as a living memorial, a center for exchange of significant ideas, and a catalyst for change and the betterment of the human condition. They offer programs such as the Girls Leadership Workshop, held every summer.

Become a Junior Secret Service Agent
The Junior Secret Service Program at the Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt is designed for children ages 7-12. The handbook and badge are available at the front desk of the Wallace Center upon request. This kids activity is free!

Play like Franklin Roosevelt did in the olden days of the 19th century. Learn to use a Jacob’s ladder, a jump rope, or the hoop and stick.

Enjoy a scheduled walk for children. Previous scheduled walks for children included:
