From Broadacres Golf Course: "Broadacres at Orangetown, is a 9-hole golf course that is situated on 65 pristine acres in southern Rockland County on the New York-New Jersey border. The location of the course makes it easily accessible for residents of both states and is only a 20 minute ride form midtown Manhattan. The golf course design offers dynamic elevation changes, undulating greens and narrow fairways surrounded by towering oaks trees. The course plays to a 9 hole regulation 3138 yards and offers patrons the opportunity of an 18 hole experience from alternate tees for a total of 6276 yards when played again. The signature 3rd hole is one of the toughest in the area measuring 228 yards from the back tees and plays up a steep hill to an undulating green. The course also offers a variety of doglegs and well bunkered greens that can challenge the most experienced golfer. Broadacres also accommodates every level of golfer from the beginner to the experienced as it offers 3 sets of tees that will allow individuals to choose their own comfort zone so that can enjoy their day on the course.
A Little Bit of History
"Broadacres Golf Course was built in 1962 and takes its name from the farm that the land the course was built on. The course was originally built for the employees and patients of the former Rockland State Hospital now the Rockland Psychiatric Center to provide a recreation area and venue to play golf. Throughout the ensuing years, much of the property was consolidated into a much smaller facility and as a result the number of individuals who used the golf course declined. The state eventually relinquished control to private operators and club memberships were then offered to the general public.
The Town of Orangetown Sees an Opportunity
"With the game of golf increasing in popularity and participation, overcrowding became an issue throughout the industry in last decade. In 2003, the Town of Orangetown decided to purchase much of the RPC property which included Broadacres Golf Course. The town did so in an effort to ease some of the overcrowding of its 27 Hole Blue Hill Golf Course facility and give residents an alternative and access to a well maintained and conditioned 9 hole course. Today, people who visit and play the course marvel at the beautiful conditions and layout. The iconic Tall Oaks surrounding the course have in a sense become the hall mark and identity of the property creating a canapé like setting over the fairways.
The Old Clubhouse …a Link to a Patriotic Past
"While many courses today exhibit state of the art designs for their clubhouses, The Old Clubhouse at Broadacres presents a patriotic link to the past. The Clubhouse dates back to the 1930’s and was used by the Red Cross while serving the GI’s of the nearby Camp Shanks which was a deployment center and the last stop for those serving our country before being sent overseas during wartime. What the Old Clubhouse may lack in amenities, it makes up in rich history which has become part of the storied past of the property and a way to remember those who sacrificed to give all of us a future. To this end, the Old Clubhouse has become sort of an iconic structure and is part of the experience when visiting Broadacres."
